Main skitouring itinerary in Western Tatras

Altitude difference: 3568m
Length: 22.8km
Maximum slope: 35-37º
Time: 14 hours
Best period: March-April

It is a difficult tour mostly on a ridge. In cold and dry winters it has a high mountain character with sections where crampons and an alpine ice axe are a must. The itinerary passes by two ski alpinism regions, namely Cervenec-Babky and Salatinska Valley. According to TANAP the part of the ridge between Priehyba sedlo col to Tychto oblasti is often impossible to pass.

Within 3:40 hours we get from a bus stop in Jalovec to Chatu pod Naruzim hut. This is a newly refurbished hut, and is free of charge on weekends. However, to use it midweek you have to ask for permission from the council of Bobrovec. Spend a night in the hut and start this long tour early in the morning. The route starts between Mala and Velka Kopa peaks. First walk around Mala Kopa to continue along the ridge of Velka Kopa to its summit, and carry on to the next summit of Ostra Kopa. From there follow easier ground to the Sivy Vrch gendarme. The final steep part to Sivy Vrch is a boot track. From Sivy Vrch ski down to Sedlo Palenica col. Then skin up on a wide slope to Brestova. This is hard and sustained skinning with over 400m altitude gain. If needed, you can escape the tour as early as Brestova peak down its N-E ridge, named Predny Salatin. Beware that in case of high avalanche risk you are not advised to follow the blue track that leads to the avalanche prone Spalny Zleb couloir. Instead ski down on one of the accessible ribs of Predny Salatina to Salatinska Valley.

After passing Brestova continue to Parichvost sedlo col and skin up to the wide summit of Salatina Vrchol peak. This is a nice summit with perfect panoramic views of Orava and Liptov.  Now walk down along the ridge to a col located between the summit and the buttress. From the col, ski down following the wide central couloir right to the bottom of the valley. This couloir is often avalanched and if in doubt check the stability of the snow before deciding to go down. Further down the tree line, turn left to get to a ski piste. The piste will lead you to Rohacska Valley. Now you are practically in Zverovka hut. A 9 km long road on which you can drive takes you to Zuberec town.

Main skitouring itinerary in High Tatras

Altitude difference: 3652m
Length: 22.2km
Maximum slope: 35-40º (Baranie col, Priecne col)
Time: 9 hours
Best period: March-April

The itinerary of this long ski touring day starts at Chata pri Zelenom Plese hut, also known as Brancalka hut, located in Kezmarska Valley. After about 9 hours it ends in Zbojnicka chata hut in Velka Studena Valley. To successfully accomplish this tour skiers have to be able to ski down tight couloirs of 45 degrees down from the Priecneho and Baranie cols. The itinerary of the tour leads through three picturesque valleys. It starts early in the morning from Pri Zelenom Plese hut where you get from a bus stop in Bela Voda (2:45 hours walk) or from Tatranska Lomnica (3:20 hours walk). You have to be prepared that in the early hours there will be hard snow in couloirs on W facing slopes, and around mid-day the snow may get wet. From the hut pass around Zelene Pleso Lake on it’s left to approach the rock band of Velka Zmarzla Valley. Get to this valley up the first steep couloir or up the summer walking path along the fixed chains. Above the rock band continue in the right part of the valley until you enter Baranie Kotla. From here you should see a couloir leading to Baranie col. If you find any problems going up this couloir then you can reach the col following the walking path along the fixed chains which are located on the right of the couloir.

To reach Mala Studena Valley ski straight down from the col and slightly left. After a short steeper slope you reach a wider less steep couloir, which leads to Terycho hut. Take a short break at the hut for a snack. In case of bad weather developing it’s safer to ski down the Mala Studena Valley to Stary Smokoviec town. Otherwise continue traversing under Pfinova Kopa, which will take you to Dolinka pod Sedielkom Valley. Continue in the valley right to the drop of Priecne sedlo col. To get there take the first couloir, which gets narrower and steeper in its upper section.

The descent from the col starts either at the top, where it offers very little space, or a couple of meters lower down. A traverse right just under the low part of a rock rib finishes this descent. This will take us to more open, less steep terrain in the upper part of the Strelekych poli snowfields. Ski mostly along the yellow trail. Near Sive pleso lake bear right in the direction of the foot of the Javorove Stity peaks. There keep traversing to Zbojnicky Spad Valley. From here continue in Zbojnicky Spad to Zbojnicka hut where you can have a longer rest. Spend a night in this welcoming hut and ski down to Hrebienok and then to Stary Smokovec for a day of on-piste skiing.

Be aware that the descents from Baranie and Priecne cols pass by terrain that is threatened with frequent avalanches. Always check the risk of avalanches and the stability of snow and don’t take any unnecessary risks if in doubt. All areas maked with "!" are off your main skitouring itinerary. However, if you are sure that you would like to use any tours (marked blue below) which are located off the main skitouring itinariry to get to an "!" area then you are advised to find out from Tanap if you can do it at that particular time of year.
